unit 9

Frame by Frame

In this technique we are using Photoshop, but instead of animating using the layers and tweening, we are going to make a simple frame by frame animation. Those what made the gif animation will find this very similar.

!MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR WORK EVERY FEW MINUTES!

1. Set up the Photoshop file as below.
Set up file correctly
2. Open the Timeline panel from the Window menu and open the Layers Panel.

3. On the Timeline Panel click the Create Frame Animation option.

4. The Timeline should look like the picture below. There is one frame on the Timeline. Note the 0 sec. and arrow at the bottom of the frame.
Frame Timeline
5. One the page, draw a simple stick figure.

6. On the Layers Panel, select the Make New Layer icon to make a new layer. It is at the bottom left of the Panel next to the Trash Can.

7. On Layer 2, draw over the figure you drew on Layer 1, but NOT the arms and legs. Draw the arms a little higher and the legs a little higher. It looks a little odd, but you are seeing through the top layer to the bottom. I should look something like the one below.
Two layers with the eye turned off on layer 1

!!!Check your drawings different and you have not drawn two sets of legs or arms!!!

Timeline Panel Drop down menu
 9. On the Timeline select the menu on the top right.  The picture above shows it surrounded by red.
Click and select Make Frames From Layers.

10. Look at the Timeline and play the animation. There are only 2 frames so it is very quick at the moment. Stop the animation.

We are going to improve it now. You need to click on the frames to make them active. ALSO click on the corresponding layer on the Layer panel.

11. Click on Frame 1 of the Timeline AND layer 1 on the Layers panel and slightly move the figure down to the bottom of the frame.

12. Click on Frame 2 of the Timeline AND layer 2 on the Layers Panel and move the figure up to the top of the frame.

  LET'S ADD MORE FRAMES!
1a. Select both frames. Go to the menu at the right of the Timeline (the one circled in red you used before) and select Select All Frames.
Select all frames

2a. From the same menu, select Copy Frame
Copy Frame
3a. From the same menu, select Paste Frames...
Paste Frames
4a. From the Options panel that pops up, select Paste After Selection and click OK.
Paste Selection
On your Timeline you should have 4 frames now! Great the sequence is twice as long.

Keep pasting the frames until you have 24 frames altogether.

unit 9 part 1

Frame : A single image within an animation sequence.
Tweening :  The process of automatically creating intermediate ( in between ) frames between two key frames.
frame rate:The speed at which each frame is presented to the viewer.
key frame : the starting point and end point of a transition
storyboard :a method of planning and organising an animation

unit 9 stop motion

My group of friends came up with this simple stop motion 12 frame film with a pencil and a rubber .

animation unit 9

1. Find another example of cel (traditional) animation, create and write a post/page of your finding.

  • Traditional animation  is an animation technique where each frame is drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until the advent of computer animation . Example shown below
  • A cel is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation . Actual celluloid was used during the first half of the 20th century, but since it was flammable and dimensionally unstable it was largely replaced by cellulose acetate

2. State two facts you learnt from watching the video by Sheila Graber (above). Two facts i learn from the video is that she use multiple sheets to create her film . For each drawn picture she writes  e1 j1 in cells . She manage each frame for whats going to happen next . She use black water marker for the final sketching of the animation . The sheet she use was exposure sheet .

STOP-MOTION

Example of a stop motion <iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/9173975" width="500" height="375" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe>
  • Stop-motion has been around since the late 19th century. It involves adding movement to inanimate objects. The object was photographed, moved a bit and then photographed again. This process is repeated a number of times. After this, the photos are patched together in order to create animation.

4. Find an example of an animation that has used computer generated 3D. Briefly describe how the animation was made. Add the information to your blog with the title"Computer Generated 3D Animation."

 COMPUTER GENERATED 3D

  • Computer animation, is the process used for generating ANIMATED IMAGES  by using computer graphics . are graphics that use a three-dimensional representation of geometric data that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. Such images may be stored for viewing later or displayed in real-time
